Initially used as a cytostatic agent in the treatment of acute lymphoblasic leukemia, but is more recently being used to treat ulcerative colitis (UC, a form of inflammatory bowel disease) [2], and some autoimmune diseases.

Antineoplastic/antimetabolite compound with many possible actions, the over-arching consequence of which is to impede the use and synthesis of the purine nucleotides. This drug is an analogue of guanine and interferes with nucleic acid biosynthesis.
