Comments
H2S is derived from L-cysteine by the enzymes cystathionine β-synthase, cystathionine γ-lyase, and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase. Like NO, hydrogen sulfide is involved in the relaxation of smooth muscle that causes erection of the penis, presenting possible new therapy opportunities for erectile dysfunction.
The beneficial anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective effects of H2S are also being exploited in the design of novel H2S-releasing anti-inflammatory drugs which exhibit greatly reduced gastrointestinal damaging side-effects than traditional NSAIDs. These novel drugs are also receiving attention for chemoprevention of cancers [1].
