Immunopharmacology Comments
Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid, that amongst other sources, is produced in the human gut by commensal microbiota via anaerobic fermentation of dietary fiber. Butyrate-mediated inhibition of HDACs is suggested to play a significant part in maintaining macrophages of the lamina propria in a tolerogenic, regulated and non-inflammatory state [8]. Butyrate inhibits HDACs by binding to the Zn2+ in the enzymes' catalytic site, and in gut macrophages this action suppresses the production of IL-6, which under normal physiological conditions is considered to be a beneficial effect [8].
