GtoPdb Ligand ID: 9971

Synonyms: OZ439
Antimalarial Ligand
Compound class: Synthetic organic
Comment: Artefenomel is a synthetic ozonide (synthetic peroxide), a class of compound that retains the endoperoxide bridge of the artemisinin class of antimalarials but also contains the sterically bulky amantadine ring, which increases blood plasma stability [6].

Guide to Malaria Pharmacology Comments
Artefenomel is an antimalarial drug candidate, under clinical development as a single-dose oral cure for uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria. Artefenomel has rapid activity against the asexual blood stage of P. falciparum, demonstrates transmission-blocking activity and provides a longer terminal half-life of elimination when compared to clinically available endoperoxides [1-2,5].

Potential Target/Mechanism Of Action: As the precise mechanism of action of artefenomel is not yet known, we do not have a molecular target for this compound. Further information about possible mechanistic insights is provided under the Clinical data tab.
