Comment HTRA1 is a serine protease that cleaves a variety of substrates including insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-binding proteins (a mechanism that regulates the availability of IGFs), TGFβ family proteins, fibronectin, amyloid precursor protein and Dickkop-related protein 3 (DKK3), and a number of additional extracellular matrix proteins [19]. Genetic variants are associated with age-related degeneration [12], cerebral small vessel disease [3,23,30], and cancer [1,38,43].
