The molecular targets of this drug are listed by ChEMBL as the potassium channel subfamily K members 3 and 9 (KCNK3 and KCNK9). Inhibition of these proteins in the carotid body (a small cluster of cells on the carotid artery whose chemoreceptors sense and respond to the partial pressure of oxygen, CO2, pH and temperature of arterial blood) is believed to cause respiratory stimulation.
