Betanidine primarily acts as an α2a adrenoceptor agonist (see the adrenoceptor family) and decreases blood pressure by suppressing renin secretion or modulating the function of the sympathetic nervous system, potentially by acting as a substrate for the norepinephrine transporter (SLC6A2).
