Comment: H2S is derived from L-cysteine by the enzymes cystathionine β-synthase, cystathionine γ-lyase, and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase. Like NO, hydrogen sulfide is involved in the relaxation of smooth muscle that causes erection of the penis, presenting possible new therapy opportunities for erectile dysfunction.
Novel H2S-releasing drugs are being developed for anti-inflammatory activity and these are receiving additional attention for chemoprevention of cancers [1]. |
