The non-mevalonate (MEP) pathway of isoprenoid precursor biosynthesis is utilized by bacteria, plants and apicomplexan protozoa but is not present in mammals (complete pathway for P. falciparum is available at www.wikipathways.org).
1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate reductoisomerase (DXR), the second enzyme in the pathway, is of interest as a therapeutic target for antimalarial drug development [1].
