| General Comments |
| GLUT1 overexpression is associated with aberant glucose transport observed in many types of cancer cells [1,7,10], may enhance metastasis [5], and is often a marker of poor prognosis [3-4,8,10]. GLUT1 overexpression allows these cells to survive in hypoxic microenvironments [2,6]. GLUT1 inhibitors can cause apoptotic death in cancer cells whilst sparing normal cells, making GLUT1 a molecular target for drug discovery. |
