Immunopharmacology Comments
Lactate accumulation at sites of inflammation has been shown to elevate SLC5A12 expression on CD4+ T cells and increase lactate uptake by the T cells [1]. In experimental conditions this leads to metabolic reprogramming of CD4+ T cells' effector phenotype which induces increased IL-17 production, which further drives pro-inflammatory processes. This lactate/SLC5A12 reprogramming mechanism has been shown to be amenable to pharmacological modulation in a mouse model of arthritis, and is proposed as a novel therapeutic target for chronic inflammatory disorders.
