Generic versions of cefotaxime are widely approved for clinical use. It is administered intravenously or intramuscularly. Cefotaxime is used to treat severe infections by susceptible bacteria, including bacterial pneumonia (NOT P. aeruginosa), complicated infections of the kidneys and upper urinary tract, infections of the skin and soft tissue, genital infections caused by gonococci, acute bacterial meningitis (particularly if due to H. influenzae, N. meningitides, S. pneumoniae, E. coli, Klebsiella spp.), intra-abdominal infections and some septicaemia infections.
