Mesalazine is used to treat active ulcerative colitis and to prevent symptom recurrence. It may also be used for the management of other types of inflammatory bowel disease (e.g. Crohn's disease).

The exact mechanism of action of mesalazine is unknown, but is believed to be derived from inhibition of cyclooxygenase and prostaglandin production in the colon. Its action is believed to be topical rather than systemic.
