Summary of Clinical Use
Used in the treatment of peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome and the relief of abdominal or stomach spasms or cramps. US FDA marketing approval for clidinium (trade name Quarzan®) has been discontinued.
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects
Mechanism of action is thought to be primarily due to inhibition of the muscarinic actions of acetylcholine on M1 muscarinic receptors located postganglionically at parasympathetic neuroeffector junctions.
