Foscarnet is used to treat cytomegalovirus retinitis in people with AIDS and to treat herpes simplex virus in immunocompromised patients.

Foscarnet prevents viral replication by selectively inhibiting the pyrophosphate binding site on virus-specific DNA polymerases. This drug does not affect host cell DNA polymerases at therapeutic concentrations.
