Summary of Clinical Use
Desirudin is used to prevent deep vein thrombosis in patients undergoing orthopedic surgery, such as hip replacement.
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects
Desirudin is a competitive and reversible inhibitor of the serine protease, thrombin. Thrombin inhibition interupts the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin in the coagulation cascade and consequently prevents clot formation.
