Dextrothyroxine is used to lower high circulating cholesterol levels.
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects
Action appears to reduce serum cholesterol by stimulating formation and catabolism of LDL which results in increased biliary excretion of cholesterol. As this is a prohormone it will also bind to thyroid hormone receptors and act as substrate for iodide peroxidase.
