Summary of Clinical Use
Doxylamine is used to treat nasal and ocular symptoms of allergies, the common cold or flu. Due to its powerful sedative effects, it may also be used to treat insomnia and is included in some night-time cold and allergy formulations (see the eMC link).
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects
The major action of doxylamine is via antagonism of endogenous histamine at the histamine H1 receptor. It is also reported to have sedative and anticholinergic actions. See the DrugBank link for further details.
