By inhibiting monoamine oxidase (MAO), this drug increases the levels of serotonin and catecholamine neurotransmitters (epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine) in synaptic storage granules throughout the central and sympathetic nervous systems. This general increase in monoamine neurotransmitters is resposible for the drug's antidepressant action. See the DrugBank link for further details.
