Used to treat hypertension and oedema (associated with heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis and corticosteroid therapy). Use of this drug appears to have been discontinued in the US, but other national approval agencies may continue marketing authorisation.

Trichlormethiazide blocks the active reabsorption of chloride in the ascending loop of Henle by inhibiting the thiazide-sensitive sodium-chloride symporter, SLC12A3. This results in excretion of sodium, chloride and water, thus reducing fluid retention and oedema.
