Iodine contaning compound used as a contrast medium to visualise the hepatic and common bile ducts (cholecystography and intravenous cholangiography procedures). There is no information regarding approval for clinical use of this drug on the US FDA or European Medicines Agency websites. Individual national agencies may have granted marketing authorisation.

The compound enters the liver from the blood stream and is secreted in to the bile shortly after administration. As the iodine content of the compound renders it radio-opaque, this allows visualisation of the biliary ducts and gallbladder under x-ray, with opacity proportional to the total amount of contrast agent present in the organs.
