Eszopiclone is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic sedative. Although chemically unrelated to the benzodizepines, this drug has an identical mechanistic action, binding to the benzodiazepine binding site on central GABAA ion channels and allosterically potentiating GABA-ergic neuro-inhibition.
