Functional Assays
Molecular cloning, two microelectrode voltage clamp and yeast two-hybrid. The same response was also seen in rats.

Response measured:  Protein-protein interactions between Kv2.1 and electrically silent Kv6.1 α-subunits detected.
Novel current with decreased rates of deactivation, and a hyperpolarizing shift of half maximal activation potential when compared to Kv2.1.

Physiological Functions
Kv6.1 subunits, when expressed alone, are unable to elicit any current. However, Kv6.1 can suppress Kv2.1 current (albeit less effectively than Kv5.1) and to a lesser extent, it can suppress Kv2.2.
The Kv2.1 currents are strongly modified by Kv6.1, which increases the time constant of activation and slows down inactivation.
