Summary of Clinical Use
Used in the treatment of migraine.
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects
Selective agonist of 5-HT type 1B and 1D receptors. Stimulation of 5-HT1D receptors inhibits dural vasodilation and inflammation, while agonism of both receptor subtypes in the brainstem inhibits trigeminal nuclei cell excitability. Vascular 5-HT1B receptor agonism causes vasoconstriction of meningeal, dural, cerebral or pial vessels.
