Summary of Clinical Use
Used in pain relief, anxiety reduction and analgesia, and in intensive care treatment for sedation of patients on mechanical ventilation and those who are intubated.
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects
Dexmedetomidine-induced activation of presynaptic α2-adrenoceptors inhibits the release if norepinephrine and terminates the propagation of pain signals. Activation of postsynaptic α2-adrenoceptors inhibits sympathetic activity and decreases blood pressure and heart rate.
