Dexmedetomidine-induced activation of presynaptic α2-adrenoceptors inhibits the release if norepinephrine and terminates the propagation of pain signals. Activation of postsynaptic α2-adrenoceptors inhibits sympathetic activity and decreases blood pressure and heart rate.
