Used to treat depression, including major depressive disorder. Use of this drug has been discontinued in some countries due to drug-induced liver damage.

Nefazodone has the over all effect of increasing serotonin signalling (antagonising post-synaptic receptors and inhibiting reuptake via SLC6A4) and antagonises α1-adrenoceptors.
