Ritonavir prevents replication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by inhibiting HIV protease. In addition, ritonavir inhibits metabolism of other antiretroviral protease inhibitors by hepatic cytochrome P450-3A4 (CYP3A4), thereby increasing their duration of action [3].
