The T1 macropain beta subunits form the catalytic proteinase core of the 20S proteasome complex [1]. This catalytic core enables the degradation of peptides with Arg, Phe, Tyr, Leu, and Glu adjacent to the cleavage site. The β5 subunit is the principal target of the approved drug proteasome inhibitor bortezomib.
