One of the mechanisms by which modafinil is proposed to operate, is as an atypical dopamine reuptake inhibitor [7]. This action would increase dopamine levels in the brain and thereby promote wakefulness. The involvement of other mechanisms is reviewed in these two articles: [3] and [5].
