Comment: Ethionamide is a thioamide compound with potent antibacterial activity against mycobacteria. It is a prodrug that requires intracellular activation, by the monooxygenase EthA, in Mycobacterium tuberculosis [1]. Ethionamide is used in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB).

Bioactivity Comments
The MIC for in vitro antimycobacterial activity is 0.25 μg/ml against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv and 0.25-4.0 μg/ml against a panel of drug-sensitive and drug-resistant M. tuberculosis isolates [2].
