It is a prodrug that requires intracellular activation, by the monooxygenase EthA, in Mycobacterium tuberculosis [1]. Ethionamide is used in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB).
