Summary of Clinical Use
A benzodiazepine used as an anti-anxiety agent with few side effects. It also has hypnotic, anticonvulsant, and considerable sedative properties and has been proposed as a preanesthetic agent. The anticonvulsant action is used to treat status epilepticus.
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects
Binds to the benzodiazepine allosteric site on GABAA channels in the CNS, potentiating the effects of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, causing the opening of the chloride channel. The resulting influx of chloride ions causes hyperpolarisation of the neuron.
