Summary of Clinical Use
Enoxacin is an antibacterial agent used in the treatment of urinary tract infections and gonorrhea. Use has been discontinued in the US. The drug has been granted orphan designation by the European Commission (2015) for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects
Enoxacin works in ALS by activating the miRMA/siRNA generating enzyme, dicer (DICER1; Q9UPY3), which appears to increase the levels of miRNA in ALS patients and slows down the deterioration of the nerve cells underlying progression of the disease [1,4].
