Description
During the lifecycle of certain Plasmodium spp., such as P. vivax and P. ovale, a proportion of the liver stage parasites do not achieve maturation immediately and remain in an arrested state of development. This dormant form (hypnozoite) can be reactivated and initiate a cycle of asexual reproduction, causing the clinical symptoms of relapsing malaria.
