General Comments |
The SARS-CoV protein 7a has no significant sequence homology with any other known viral or non-viral proteins. Sequence analysis predicts that ORF 7a encodes a type I transmembrane protein, and a crystal structure reveals that its luminal domain is topologically immunoglobulin-like [1]. SARS-CoV 7a is an accessory protein that is dispensible for virus replication. It's main function appears to be disruption of the host cell cycle and induction of caspase-dependent apoptosis [2]. Co-precipitation of 7a and host Ap4A-hydrolase reveals another interaction that may cause cell cycle arrest and apoptosis [3]. By homology SARS-CoV-2 protein 7a is likely to perform a similar function(s). |
