Summary of Clinical Use |
Histrelin is used to treat hormone-sensitive prostate cancers and uterine fibroids. The drug is also effective in treating precocious puberty in children. |
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects |
Histrelin acetate is a 9 amino acid analog of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). The drug activates GnRH receptors in pituitary gonadotrophs, which release the gonadotropins LH and FSH. Sustained activation of GnRH receptors leads to their desensitisation and levels of LH and FSH fall, and the levels of sex steroids remains low. |
