Artificial maintainence of high levels of circulating progestin feeds back to reduce the frequency of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) pulses which blunts the pre-ovulatory lutenising hormone (LH) surge, and the ovaries cease cyclic ovulation.
