GD3 ganglioside is widely expressed in human malignant melanoma cell lines and tumours [2] and antibodies against ganglioside have been shown to induce tumour cell death [3]. It is believed that gangliosides like GD3 are involved in the tumour cell attachment critical to invasion and metastasis. Vaccination with a GD3 mimic is designed to enhance immunogenicity against GD3 [4].
