Used to treat estrogen receptor +ve breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Use in premenopausal women (with esstrogen-responsive cancer) is effective if ovarian function is concomittantly suppressed, and this combined therapy is more effective than treatment with tamoxifen plus ovarian suppression [2].

Exemestane lowers estrogen levels by inhibiting the cytochrome P450 enzyme (CYP19A1, aka aromatase) which is key to estrogen biosynthesis from androgens.
