Sevoflurane depresses activity in the central nervous system (this includes muscle relaxation and reduced sensitivity to pain) leading to loss of consciousness. The drug decreases cell-cell signalling across gap junctions by modulating the activity of a range of ion channels that underlie the action potential, thereby altering tissue excitability.
