GtoPdb Ligand ID: 13141

Comment: Tetrahydroharmine is a plant-derived β-carboline alkaloid that is a component of the psychoactive drink Ayahuasca, that is traditionally brewed by indigenous cultures in the Amazon. It is one of the harmala alkaloids produced by plants such as Banisteriopsis caapi and Peganum harmala. Pharmacologically tetrahydroharmine acts to prevent the breakdown of Ayahuasca's principal hallucinogenic substance dimethyltryptamine (DMT) by reversibly inhibiting monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) [1].

Bioactivity Comments
There is some evidence to suggest that tetrahydroharmine can behave as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor [2-3].
