platypus venom heptapeptide 1   Click here for help

GtoPdb Ligand ID: 13200

Comment: This small peptide is a component of the venom produced by male duck-billed platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus [3]). It corresponds to a seven amino acid N-terminal linear fragment of Ornithorhynchus venom C-type natriuretic peptide (P84715) [1-2]. Ornithorhynchus venom causes immediate acute pain in humans that transforms to sustained hyperalgesia.
Bioactivity Comments
In vitro chemically synthesised heptapeptide 1 increases intracellular [Ca2+] in neuroblastoma IMR-32 cells, but this effect is not caused by modulation of L- or N-type voltage-gated calcium channels, potassium channels or a sodium channel [4]. The molecular target of heptapeptide 1 remains to be determined.
