Nitrofural is not absorbed significantly through the skin or mucous membranes and is used to treat skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria. The US FDA have withdrawn all drug products containing nitrofural (except topical drug formulations for dermatological application). The drug does not have EMA marketing authorisation but is approved in a number of individual European countries by their national agencies.
