Summary of Clinical Use
Thiopential is used both for the induction of anesthesia and for complete anesthesia for periods of short duration. FDA marketing authorisation appears to have been discontinued.
Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects
Thiopental prolongs the post-synaptic inhibitory effect of GABA in the thalamus by binding with the Cl- ionophore at the GABAA receptor and increases the duration for which it is open.
Due to the complex nature of the GABAA Cl- ionophore, we do not tag a primary target for this drug.
