Mechanism Of Action and Pharmacodynamic Effects
Nitroglycerin is converted to nitric oxide (NO). This activates soluble guanylyl cyclase which in turn increases cGMP synthesis, leading to a downstream release of calcium ions and finally relaxation of the smooth muscle cells and vasodilation.
