Immunopharmacology Comments |
IL-31 is a known pruritogen [5,7,9]. Its expression is elevated in inflammatory cells in atopic dermatitis [1-3] and it is considered to be a marker of the severity of the itch response to allergens [4]. Transgenic mice overexpressing IL-31 spontaneously develop pruritic dermatitis [8]. BMS-981164, an anti-IL-31 monoclonal antibody is being evaluated in Phase I clinical trial as a potential therapy for atopic dermatitis (see NCT01614756 for full details). Also targeting the IL-31/IL-31R pathway is nemolizumab (CIM331), a humanized antihuman interleukin-31 receptor A antibody that has shown favourable outcomes in a Phase 2 trial for atopic dermatitis [6]. |
