Synonyms: carbon monoxide
Compound class: Inorganic
Comment: Carbon monoxide is naturally produced by the action of heme oxygenase 1 and 2, which convert heme into biliverdin and carbon monoxide, utilizing NADPH as cofactor. Carbon monoxide has received a great deal of clinical attention as a biological regulator. Clinical trials of small amounts of carbon monoxide as a drug are ongoing. CO-releasing molecules (CORMs) are in development for their potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties [1].
