Summary of Clinical Use Click here for help
Mecillinam is administered parenterally due to low oral bioavailability. An orally active ester prodrug pivmecillinam has also been developed. The primary indication for mecillinam is in the treatment of urinary tract infections [2] and the drug has also been investigated as a treatment for typhoid and paratyphoid fever [1]. Mecillinam was approved in the UK and by the US FDA but has since been discontinued.
