Used in the treatment of vasodilatory shock states such as septic shock and neurogenic shock. Also used in the treatment of critical hypotension as a vasopressor medication.

Agonism of alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenergic receptors leads to peripheral vasoconstriction. Activity at beta-adrenergic receptors leads to dilation of the coronary arteries.
