GtoPdb Ligand ID: 9532

Synonyms: hydrogen sulfide
Immunopharmacology Ligand
Compound class: Inorganic
Comment: H2S is derived from L-cysteine by the enzymes cystathionine β-synthase, cystathionine γ-lyase, and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase. Like NO, hydrogen sulfide is involved in the relaxation of smooth muscle that causes erection of the penis, presenting possible new therapy opportunities for erectile dysfunction.
Novel H2S-releasing drugs are being developed for anti-inflammatory activity and these are receiving additional attention for chemoprevention of cancers [1].
Immunopharmacology Comments
The beneficial anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective effects of H2S are also being exploited in the design of novel H2S-releasing anti-inflammatory drugs which exhibit greatly reduced gastrointestinal damaging side-effects than traditional NSAIDs (e.g. otenaproxesul). These novel drugs are also receiving attention for chemoprevention in oncology [1].
